Spring weather is finally here! Fingers crossed that it's here to stay! The kids are having a blast playing outside. I haven't been been updating on the blog as regularly since I have been using Twitter. I "tweet" a few times a week. It is really easy to create a twitter account. I would love to have more parent followers! I can be found at @MissCalcott.

I am super excited for Friday because it is the music festival! This is one of my absolute favorite days of the year! Mrs. Moen and the students work so incredibly hard to create a great show for us. I am so lucky to get a sneak peek of the show when the students rehearse tomorrow morning! Can't wait! I hope to see many of you at the show tomorrow night!

While doing a social studies lesson about the different cultures that live in the United States, Ellis Island was mentioned. The students got very interested and asked to learn more. We are going to do a small unit about Ellis Island. I am proud of the students for taking interest in a historical topic, and asking to learn more about it! That is music to a teacher's ears!

Book Orders
Just a little reminder that Scholastic Book Orders are due on Thursday, April 17th. I will try to send one more order at the beginning of May so that students can stock up on some summer reading books.

Remember to follow me on Twitter! It is such a great way to stay connected!

I don't know about all of you, but I am ready for some spring weather! The students are getting a slight case of cabin fever from all of the indoor recesses that we've had to endure.

Math Update:
We have been working on area and perimeter. We have also started to discuss fractions. The students should be practicing their multiplication facts every night. Even if there is no assigned homework, they need to practice for at least a few minutes.

Field Trip:
Please check the Friday Folders for information about our upcoming field trip!

Hello Everyone!

I apologize for not updating in a while. Our district recently switched to gmail, and it effected my ability to log on to this blog! I just wanted to give a few quick updates.

*** Start Following me on my new Twitter account @MissCalcott***

Indoor Recess
We have been having indoor recess quite often! The students are starting to get extremely bored with the games that we currently have. If you have any gently used games (Uno cards, go fish cards, Sorry, Etc.) that you would like to donate, please feel free to send them in. The students would greatly appreciate it!

President Poster Project
I just want to remind everyone that the President Poster Project is due on February 24th. Since the students will be presenting their posters in front of the class, please make sure that practice presenting at home. If your child finishes their posters early, you can start sending them in now.

Valentine's Day
I just want to remind everyone that Friday is Valentine's Day. It is also a half day! On Friday, I sent a class list home to be used for your child to fill out their Valentines. You can start sending valentines in now if you would like. Just make sure your child's name is on them so we don't get confused. :)

Math Update
Right now we are working on multiplying by 6. Please make sure your child is practicing their multiplication facts every night.

Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break/holiday season! Last week was a little crazy with the super cold days we had! I'm so happy to see that it is warm enough for the kids to go outside this week. Please make sure they come to school with the appropriate outdoor clothing.

Book Order
I sent a Scholastic book order home in Friday Folders. Please have all orders turned in or placed online by Friday, January 24th. Our online class code is HQWMF. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Report Card Envelopes
Please be sure to send your child's signed report card envelope back to school as soon as possible. This is our way of making sure you have seen the grades.

This Week
English: We are reviewing for our English test. We will be taking the test on Thursday. The students will be bringing their English books home to study from today (Monday), Tuesday, and Wednesday. I will also send a note home showing the pages to study from.
Math: This week we will learn to solve mixed word problems involving all four operations with grams, kilograms, liters, and millimeters given in the same units, round two-digit measurements to the nearest ten on the vertical number line, and round two- and three-digit numbers to the nearest ten on the vertical number line. We will be starting our 5's in multiplication this week. Some students still have not mastered their 3's and 4's. Make sure that your child is practicing all of the facts we have covered. It is important that they retain the previously mastered facts as well as the new ones.
Reading: We will be reading a story called, Papa Tells Chita a Story. We will also be discussing the different spellings of the /or/ sound, how to summarize, how to make predictions, and how to identify synonyms and antonyms.
Science: We will continue our lessons about the rain forest. We will start an in-class animal research project.
Social Studies: We are learning about the history of St. Louis and Cahokia. Ask your child about Cahokia. It is very interesting information!

Hello Everyone!

Today is the first day this week that the students were able to play outside for recess! I'm sure you can only imagine how happy they were when they heard that they would be able to play in the snow! Hopefully next week is warm enough for them to go outside for recess.

In math we had a quiz over the first 5 lessons for unit 2. You will see the quiz in Friday Folders today. You will also see a test over the 3's for multiplication. If your child did not receive a grade of 27/30 or higher, they will need to retake it until they do. Today we started practicing the 4's. Please make sure your child is practicing multiplication facts at home.

Please make sure all gift exchange gifts are brought in by Wednesday, December 18th. If you have a concern about this activity, please let me know as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful weekend! Stay warm!!

Hello!!

Be sure to check your child's Friday Folder right away. There should be a folded sheet of paper that will explain our Christmas Gift Exchange. Each child in the class has randomly picked another student in the class to purchase a gift (no more than $5.00) for. Please be sure to have the gift wrapped and brought in by December 18th. You can start sending the gifts to school as soon as you have them. If you are not able to participate in this gift exchange for any reason, please let me know and I will assume the responsibility of getting a gift for the student that your child selected. The students absolutely LOVE doing this gift exchange! It really brings the class together as a community.

I hope everyone has a very safe and happy Thanksgiving! I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with your children!

Hello Everyone! We had some very cold days this week! Please make sure you are sending your child to school with a coat for recess. I sent home a scholastic book order today in Friday Folders. I am making it due a week from today (Friday, November 22nd). Please make sure all orders are in by then. We have many exciting events planned for next week. I'm sure you will hear your child talking about them during the week!

The Week Ahead
English: We will continue our unit on verbs.
Writing: We are learning how to organize our writing when we are comparing two things.
Math: We will explore time as a continuous measurement using a stopwatch, relate skip-counting by 5 on the clock and telling time to a continuous measurement model, the number line, count by fives and ones on the number line as a strategy to tell time to the nearest minute on the clock, and solve word problems involving time intervals within 1 hour by counting backward and forward using the number line and clock.
Reading: We will be reading a story called, Centerfield Ballhawk. This is a difficult story for some kids to understand. The story uses lots of baseball "lingo" and figurative language. Please make sure your child reads the story on Monday and Thursday when he or she brings it home. We will be working on understanding figurative language during reading class as well.
Science: We will continue learning about different animal habitats and ecosystems.
Social Studies: We will continue our discussions and activities about the first Thanksgiving.

PTA REMINDER: Orders for the yearbook are due Friday, November 22nd. Please get those turned in next week!

Have a great weekend! Please feel free to contact me at bcalcott@orionschools.us with any questions or concerns.
