Friday Newsletter

Hello everyone! I hope that you are enjoying your weekend! This week was very busy. We had our reading MAPs test on Tuesday and we had Ag in the Class on Thursday! Ag in the Class was very fun. The students learned about pigs and pig farmers. They each got to make a representation of a feed sack. They got to put many different treats inside their bags to remind them about the things they learned. On Monday we will be having our math MAPs testing. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep the night before.

Multiplication
I just want to remind everyone to keep practicing the multiplication facts! I am continuously retesting the students to make sure that they are not forgetting the facts once they have mastered them. Please take a few minutes each night to practice the facts.

The Week Ahead
English: We have finished learning all of the new concepts about verbs. This week, we will review on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We will have the test on Thursday. I will be sending a note home in the students' assignment notebooks explaining the page numbers that the test will cover. I will also remind students to bring their English books home each night this week.
Math: We will learn to subtract 5 and 6, read and write roman numerals, add three digit numbers, read and write dollar amounts to $1000, write checks, and identify ordinal position.
Reading: My reading class will be reading a West African tale called, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. We will also discuss how to summarize, how to make and confirm predictions, how to compare and contrast stories, how to decode words by using accent marks in the dictionary, and how to make inferences.
Science: We will learn more about animal habitats and animal footprints.
Social Studies: We will learn about different types of physical features in and around a community.

Thank you for  your continued support! Please feel free to contact me at bcalcott@orionschools.us with any questions or concerns.

Friday Newsletter

We had another interesting week for weather, however, it looks as though winter has finally arrived! I just want to remind everyone that we do not have school on Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Friday, the students were shown a movie that explains who Martin Luther King Jr. was and what he did for our country. When the movie ended, we were able to have a short discussion about some of the concepts shown in the video.

The Week Ahead
English: We will finish our unit about verbs, but we will not take the test until the following week. Please pay attention for a note that will go home with your child at the end of the week. This note will give more details about when the test will be and how to study for it.
Reading: My reading class will be reading a Native American Tale called, Coyote Places the Stars. We will also discuss how to compare and contrast, how to summarize, how to use prereading strategies, how to decode words with the igh and eigh spelling patterns, how to identify figurative language, and much more.
Science: We will continue our unit about animal habitats, animal populations, and habitat capacity.
Social Studies: We will continue our unit about where people start communities.

I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend! Please do not hesitate to e-mail at bcalcott@orionschools.us with questions or concerns.

Friday Newsletter

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season! It has been an adjustment for the students to get back into the swing of things, but they have done it! The weather this week was very interesting. Thursday and Friday felt a little like spring, and the students had a blast playing outside at recess! Those warm days were a relief after those colder days we had earlier in the week.

The Week Ahead
English: This week we reviewed some of the verb unit. I wanted to make sure to refresh memories after the break. We then learned a new concept about the special verb be. Next week, we will continue to learn about verbs. We are getting close to the end of the unit. When we get closer to the test, I will send a note home.
Math: In math, we will learn to write numbers to 1,000 using words, add and subtract multiples of 100, multiply by 2, look for a pattern to solve a problem, draw a picture to solve a problem, make a table to solve a problem, and draw and read a line graph.
Reading: My reading students will read a story called, Papa Tell Chita a Story. We will also discuss narrative elements including conflicts and resolutions, classifying, decoding and making compound words, and much more.
Science: We will finish our unit about types of animals.
Social Studies: We will start a unit about where people start communities.

Multiplication
On a regular basis, I have been testing the students over their 7s facts. It is very important that the students continue to practice their facts. Next week, we will be learning to multiply by 2. Please be sure to start quizzing your child on the 2 facts starting Thursday. In a previous post, I posted a link to a website where you can print free flash cards. This is a great resource.

Report Cards
Report cards went home in Friday Folders today. Please look over your child's report card, sign the envelope, and send the envelope back to school with your child on Monday.

I hope 2012 is going well for everyone! Have a wonderful weekend!!
