Hello Everyone! We are off to a great start this year! We have survived the first two weeks of school! The students have been working very hard to adjust to 3rd grade. I am very proud of the progress they are making! I update this blog every week to inform parents of what we are learning in the upcoming week. I also try to put reminders for different school events that are coming up in the near future. If you ever need to get into contact with me, please send me e-mails at bcalcott@orionschools.us or called the school and leave me a voicemail. My extension is 1332. I check my e-mail often, and I try to respond as quickly as I receive them!

The Week Ahead
English: We have been working on a unit about sentences. So far we have learned the definition of a sentence, and how to identify one. We also learned about the four types of sentences (statements, questions, commands, and exclamations). This week we will learn about subjects and predicates of a sentence. This concept can be slightly difficult for students to grasp at first, so feel free to "quiz" your child on these concepts at the end of the week to keep it fresh in their minds!
Writing: We are going to be learning to come up with topic sentences while writing.
Math: We will learn to divide squares in to two and four equal parts, identify congruent shapes, make fractions on a number line, and we will start a discussion about multiplication by thinking about things that come in equal groups.
Reading: My reading class will be reading a realistic fiction story called, Pepita Talks Twice. We will also  be learning about the narrative elements for a fiction story, how to make and confirm predictions, how to use a dictionary, what synonyms are and how to identify them, and we will also discuss how the inflections -s and -es effect a root word.
Science: We have already discussed plants, their needs, and how they make food. We will move into a unit about animals and their needs.
Social Studies: We have been learning about how to read maps. The students have started to work in groups to create a map of the school. This week we will finish making the maps and we will present them to the class. All of the maps will include a title, a map key with symbols, and a compass rose. The students are enjoying this assignment and are working very hard!

Grandparent Ice Cream Social
This is one of my favorite days of the year! The Grandparent Ice Cream social is going to be on Monday, September 9th from 3:00-4:00. Students and their grandparents will be able to get a sundae after school and then come down to the classroom! I always LOVE meeting my students' grandparents! If your child and their grandparents are able to come please fill out the bottom portion of the sheet that went home in Friday Folders and return in by September 4th. If you have any questions about this event please contact Becky Nightingale at 781-6599 or Amy Kayser at amykayser@yahoo.com.
